. . .

Seven a.m. the next morning at the station, Jack was knee-deep looking at phone records. He had taken the cell tower records over to the tech office to do a graph of where Jade’s phone had been before, during, and after her murder, as well as Rafe Preston’s burner phone number.

Lucky walked in bearing gifts of two coffees and two Egg McMuffins from Mickey-Ds.

“Thanks, Lucky, I didn’t stop for breakfast this morning.” Taking the wrapper off the breakfast sandwich he took a bite.

“I can’t believe you gave him a few days to get back to us, don’t you think you were overly generous?” Lucky took his Egg McMuffin out of the bag.

“Yeah, but we need to have the time to verify his alibi, which I think will check out. The guy is sweating bullets or shitting himself, since now he has to confess to the wifey-poo. This’ll give him some time in case she decides to throw him out on his ear. But I’m not messing with this guy. I’ll get his DNA and then he’ll sweat even more.”

“Yeah, and I have to say what a douchebag, he let his little head do his thinking, dumb-ass.” Lucky chomped on his sandwich.

“Here, you call his boss, Gary Thompson, see if he alibis up to eight p.m. I’ll call these two guys, Stan Beekman and, uh…”Jack looked at his notes. “Willard Jones, see if they both say the same thing and Preston was with them at the Oasis Bar.”

“I looked up the Oasis Bar last night. It’s a bar, and an eatery, opens at eleven for lunch. It’s off Capitol Street. Let’s kill two birds with one stone, we eat lunch and talk to the bartender.”

“Good idea.” Jack punched in the cell number for Stan Beekman.

“Everything checked out with his boss, he was with him until eight.” Lucky was discouraged.

“Both men said he was with them, but we’ll confirm with the bartender too. I have the copy of Jade’s phone records here. His burner phone was burning up her phone. Calls and texts, man, this guy was obsessed.” Jack sifted through the last days Jade had used her phone when his own phone rang.

“Homicide, West. Hi, Art, got good news for me?” Jack paused to listen. “Yeah, sure, thanks, Art.”

“Walsworth from Tech?” Lucky looked up.

“Yeah, he was calling with the cell tower report.”

“Did he have good news, I hope?”

“No, her phone triangulated from her work and her apartment, which is right at two miles apart on the Thursday night she was murdered. Wednesday, her phone pinged near the Club Razz area. The cheater’s burner number was near his work, the Oasis Bar, and Club Razz, then his house, and it never pinged anywhere near her apartment. This solidifies his alibi, but we’ll go over to the Oasis anyway. Besides, we gotta eat.”

Jack figured Preston wasn’t their man, but something nag at him.
